Studies on the Regulation of Pituitary-Adrenal-Thyroid and Gonadal Functions in Rats with Hypothalamic Lesions
A great number of data has accumulated in the literature suggesting a leading role of the ventromedial hypothalamic region in the maintenance of pituitary function. Lesion to this hypothalamic area produces hyperphagia and obesity (Harris 1955, Szentágothai et al. 1962, Lissák and Endröczi 1960, 1965, Hetherington and Ranson 1940, Brobeck et al. 1943, Morgane and Jacobs 1969, etc.). Though Hetherington (1943) already had pointed out that elimination of the pituitary gland did not prevent the development of hypothalamic obesity, recent observations indicate some kind of influence of the pituitary function on the syndrome and there are data showing alterations in the pituitary troph hormone secretion which seems to be accompanied by hypothalamic obesity (Morgane and Jacobs 1969, Valenstein et al. 1969). Recently, we were interested to study the possible alterations of the pituitary functions in connection with the development of hypothalamic obesity which had been produced by electrolytic lesions in the ventromedial hypothalamic area in the rats.
