Hypophysiotropic Hormones, Cyclic AMP and Anterior Pituitary Protein Synthesis and Release

Abstract

Physiological and anatomical evidence has established for quite some time that the secretion of the anterior pituitary hormones is under the control of substances originating from the hypothalamus and transported, via a portal system, to the anterior pituitary (Fig. 1—Meites and Nicoli 1966, Guillemin 1967, McCann and Porter 1969, Meites 1970). Very important knowledge on the mechanism of action of the hypothalamic hypophysiotropic hormones (also called hypothalamic releasing factors) has been gained using hypothalamic extracts at various stages of the purification, but the recent availability of a pure releasing factor of known molecular structure, TRF (Burgus et al. 1969, Boler et al. 1969), brings more confidence and opens new possibilities for this area of investigation.
