Monte Carlo Simulation of Some Flysch Deposits from the East Carpathians

Abstract

The mathematical simulation of a series of Cretaceous-Paleogene flysch deposits from the East Carpathians (Romania) on an IBM 360/40 computer was made to obtain information regarding the sedimentation mechanism of flysch deposits. Thickness of strata for two states (sandstone and shale) of different age and geographic location was measured. The mathematical simulation of the flysch sequences was accomplished by a random extraction of shale thickness from a lognormal distribution and sandstone thickness from an empirical distribution. A comparison between the simulated and real curves, representing the variation of sandstone contents, established by the computation and automatic graphic representation of sandstone percentages in fix vertical intervals, revealed similarity of two series.
