Neutron and X-Ray Inelastic Scattering by Lattice Vibrations
Neutron and x-ray inelastic scattering measurements enable the frequencies and eigenvectors of the normal modes of vibration of crystals to be determined. The effects of the anharmonicity on these measurements are discussed. It is shown that they may give rise to both line shape and intensity anomalies, which may complicate the extraction of the parameters for the normal modes. Recent theoretical developments are described which suggest that the calculation of these effects may be extremely difficult even in weakly anharmonic crystals.
