The first paper in this section is a review by Balkanski of some of the highlights of the International Conference on Phonons, which was held at Rennes, France in late July 1971. Balkanski discusses a number of topics of current interest in lattice dynamics, including uncertainties in the determination of force constants from frequency measurements alone, calculation of phonon properties both from the microscopic and model theories, elastic interactions of defects in crystals, and anharmonic effects. Some of these topics are also discussed in other papers in this section, as well as in papers in the final section.
