Measurement Theory and Biology

Although this gathering is concerned with many aspects of Biology, including the philosophical and the historical, I think it fair to say that the central and crucial problem we are trying to face is whether some general theory, outlook or perspective can be attained which will win the following of legitimate, practicing biologists in the sense of being fruitfully useful and acceptable to them in an operational way. Such an outlook has certainly been lacking in the past. It is my belief that a discussion of the measurement process and its relation with the basic problems in statistical mechanics can suggest the directions of such a perspective and theory. Biological theory must in some sense be a mixture of the macroscopic and the microscopic, where statistical mechanics of great subtlety and complexity plays an important role.
