Circadian Rhythms in Neurospora

By comparison with some organisms, only a moderate amount of research on circadian rhythms has been carried out with the fungus Neurospora, although it is fast becoming one of the better characterized systems. The first report of a rhythm in Neurospora was in a strain called patch (Brandt, 1953) and, since that time, other strains have been described which exhibit rhythmicity, e.g. clock (Sussman, Lowry, and Durkee, 1964), and timex (Sargent and Woodward, 1965). In addition, this paper describes conditions under which most Neurospora strains manifest some degree of rhythmicity. Little has been done with any of these rhythmic strains in terms of studying the biochemistry of the rhythm or in attempting to elucidate the mechanism(s) involved in generating oscillations. The beginnings of such studies on Neurospora are discussed in this paper.
