For certain laser applications it is required to obtain generation in the form of one intensity peak having a short duration. Such a peak is called a single pulse to distinguish it from the train of peaks which accompany relaxation oscillations of the intensity (Chap. VII). A resonator with a rapidly switched Q is used to produce a single pulse.
