Recent Studies of the CS2/O2 Combustion Laser

The addition of gases such as N2, N2O and He were found to have a dramatic effect in changing the performance of both an electrically sparked and a CW laser. Both the output power and spectroscopic output were monitored in the presence of given amounts of diluent gas as a function of fuel/oxygen ratio. While the pumping reaction in the pulsed operation is felt to be O + CS → CO + S no unequivocal evidence can be found to rule out the competing reaction CS + O2 → CS + SO in the CW flow laser.
