The Drunkard’s Walk

  • D. A. Frank-Kamenetskii

The random walk in ordinary space can be illustrated by the following graphic example (Fig. 39). Imagine a drunkard walking through a wood with no particular purpose in mind. Each time he encounters a tree he turns in a completely arbitrary direction. His path covers an area which increases in proportion to the time. Assume that the area can be taken as a circle whose center remains stationary and whose radius increases with t.
