When an alternating field is applied to a plasma a situation can sometimes arise in which there is a magnetic field of one sign frozen into the plasma, while the field outside has the opposite sign. Similarly, regions with opposite fields can come into contact for other reasons, e.g., randomly moving magnetic regions in the solar atmosphere. Finally, deliberate creation of an external field, opposite to that inside, has been proposed as a method for stabilization of pinches.
