Abstract
In order to convert a gas into a plasma state it is necessary to tear away at least some of the electrons from the atoms, there-by converting these atoms into ions. This detachment of electrons from atoms is called ionization. The detailed mechanism of ionization on the atomic-molecular level will be examined below. Here we limit ourselves to a discussion of the general characteristics of this process.
