Abstract

The applications of infrared spectroscopy to steroid identification by Herget and Shorr (1941), Furchgott et al. (1946), and Dobriner et al. (1948) were important advances in this field. Other early work on the infrared absorption of steroids has been reviewed by Jones and Dobriner (1949), Cole (1954; 1956), Rosenkrantz (1955), Jones and Herling (1954), Page (1957), and Jones and Sandorfy (1956). A collection of infrared charts of a large number of steroids and steroidal sapogenins has been published by Dobriner et al. (1953) and a second volume by Roberts et al. (1958). Studies concerning the steroidal sapogenins have been summarized by Kasturi (1963).
