Modification of Lattice Vibrations by Impurities

Abstract

The interaction of lattice vibrations with a point imperfection has two aspects. In the first place the imperfection will modify the normal modes of vibration of the lattice. In the second place these modified modes will affect processes, such as optical absorption, taking place at the imperfection. These two aspects can hardly be separated since it is, as we shall see, frequently most convenient to treat the effect of the modified modes on a process at the imperfection without ever explicitly examining the modified normal modes themselves. It will, therefore, be necessary for us to consider both aspects although the main object of these lectures is to show how to take account of the modification of the modes.
