It might seem curious that we are reporting on a “preliminary” study of a therapy which has been in constant clinical use for 23 years. Over 500 articles about electrosleep have been published in the Russian literature, describing the treatment of many thousands of patients. However, as Iwanovsky and Dodge pointed out(2)when they reviewed Russian reports, “statistical, experimental, and clinical data were lacking, as was information on the use of controls or efforts to rule out the possiblity of a ‘placebo’ effect of electrosleep.”
