Prompt Gamma Rays from π-Bombardment of C12 Near the 3–3 Resonance

Preliminary data on prompt gamma rays from discrete nuclear levels from pion bombardment of C12 has been obtained. Measurement of such gamma rays give a method of indirectly studying the scattering of pions on nucleii in a manner similiar to that employed by Clegg et. all, in studying proton reactions at the Harwell synchrocyclotron. The use of pions differs from protons in having 0 spin, unit isospin and displaying an isospin dependant nucleon resonance. Gamma ray measurements obviate necessity of using a good resolution pion beam but entail some abiguities in assignment of nuclear levels.
