Structure of the Kurile Arc

  • Chapter

Part of the Monographs in Geoscience book series (MOGEO)

Abstract

The Kurile Islands chain extends from the south of Kamchatka to the island of Hokkaido, as though tying these two regions together and, at the same time, separating the more epeiric Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean. On the whole, the chain of islands forms an arc that is slightly convex to the east and that belongs to the system of island arcs that borders the continent of Asia on the east. Like other island arcs. the Kurile Islands are separated from the ocean basin by a deep trench and from the continent by the basin of an epeiric sea.
