Abstract

During the past six years a variety of experiments have been performed which reveal a rapidly varying tunnel conductance on an energy scale of from 5 to 100 meV. All of these variations occur at too small a bias (V ≲ 100 mV) or are too sharp to be attributed to variations in the junction potential with bias. In this chapter I shall outline a general theory in which these rapid variations in the differential tunnel conductance are attributed either to the excitation of internal degrees of freedom of the barrier or to self-energy effects in the electrodes.
