The high performance of control systems which ensures the continuance of life in the animal world has attracted the attention of scientists for many centuries. The control in living organisms is one of the most jealously guarded secrets of nature, into which science has so far penetrated very little. The problem of control in living organisms is being studied from various aspects by representatives of various scientific disciplines. Physiologists and psychologists study the structure of the control systems on the basis of investigations into the behaviour of organisms, histologists by elucidating the cell structure; biophysicists and biochemists investigate the physical and chemical processes forming the basis of control of biological systems. Cybernetics also contributes to the study of control systems in living organisms. The task of cybernetics is to understand and reproduce the features of living control mechanisms in terms of the general relationships in control theory.
