Abstract

In the embryogenesis of higher vertebrates, hematopoietic cells initially appear in the yolk sac; later, foci of hematopoietic cells are also formed in the mesenchyme of the embryo. The next important step in the development of hematopoiesis occurs in the embryonic liver, after which it is transferred to the bone marrow, which throughout the rest of life serves as the principal hematopoietic organ (Metcalf and Moore, 1971). Each of these stages of development of hematopoietic tissue follows a different course if different explantation techniques are used.
