Abstract

When the time dependence of the absolute value of the electron density and effective electron temperature are known, it is a simple matter on the basis of the “direct electron impact” mechanism to calculate the time variation of the absolute value of the excitation rate of the upper laser state and the population of that state. Both of these variables can also be determined from the experimental data. A comparison of the measured and calculated data should reveal how closely the “direct electron impact” mechanism describes the excitation of inversion in the laser.
