Ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclic alkenes

  • Chapter

Abstract

The ring-opening polymerization of cyclic alkenes is a special case of the more general olefin metathesis reaction. A number of specialist reviews1 have appeared in the literature on both the metathesis of alkenes and ring-opening polymerization. The metathesis reaction was initially discovered by Banks and Bailey2 but it was Calderon3 who first recognized the relationship between ring-opening polymerization and the olefin metathesis, or disproportionation, reaction. The reaction is catalysed by complexes derived principally from group VI metal compounds but group IV and V compounds have also been used. Effective catalysts may be either homogeneous or heterogeneous and, although not essential as part of the catalyst system, organometallic compounds, usually either organometallic aluminium or tin compounds, are incorporated as a second component of two component catalyst systems.
