Extractive Dialysis

  • Chapter

Abstract

Somewhat simplified, the search for poisons in the body can be subdivided into 3 main steps:

  1. 1.

Extraction from the biological matrix; and if we say extraction we do not restrict that term to liquid extraction techniques, but we also include other methods such as extraction by steam or ion exchangers.

  2. 2.

Fractionation of extracts into their components, which is today mostly carried out by chromatographic approaches.

  3. 3.

Identification of individual constituents, which is usually done — if not already accomplished by the chromatographic data — by spectrophotometry and more and more by mass spectrometry.
