Abstract

We have referred to the Zeeman effect several times already. This is because it is of prime importance in confirming experimentally many of the vectorial effects in atom mechanics which are the result of quantum-mechanical theory. Together with the Stern-Gerlach experiment the Zeeman experiemnt confirms the existence of all the magnetic quantum numbers and the space properties of the corresponding vectors. It also gave the earliest value for the charge-to-mass ratio, e/m, of the bound electron. This was a better numerical result than that of J. J. Thomson for the free electron.
