Abstract
Anne McLaren, a pioneer in the study of embryo manipulation, wrote the following summary of the prospects for preimplantation genetic diagnosis: “Although possibilities exist for preimplantation diagnosis by means of embryonic biopsy, much research on human material would need to be done to find out whether they were feasible, or whether they reduced unduly the chances of a successful pregnancy. Since they necessarily involve in vitro manipulation and subsequent embryo transfer, it seems unlikely that they would ever become the method of choice except for couples who were undertaking IVF for other reasons, or who had absolute objections to post-implantation termination of pregnancy, combined with considerable determination and financial resources. For most couples, chorionic villus biopsy as early in the post-implantation period as is safe and practicable would seem to offer better prospects.”(1)
