Abstract

For all applications of spectroscopy to problems in science and technology intensities and wavelengths of absorbed or emitted radiation have to be measured. A major limitation in practical applications is imposed by the attainable detection sensitivity. The answer to the question: “How few atoms, molecules or photons can still be detected at a reasonable signal-to-noise ratio?” may be of crucial importance for the successful solution of a given problem.
