Abstract

Lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT; EC 2.3.1.43) is the major source of cholesteryl esters in human plasma1. Despite the considerable progress made in the characterization of this enzyme, the precise mechanism for the formation of cholesteryl esters and their distribution in the various plasma lipoproteins remains unknown and is still actively studied. We will summarize here some of the most recent investigations made in this area and describe some pertinent results from our laboratory.
