Laboratory Diagnosis of Herpes Viruses in the Immunocompromised Host

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 202))

Abstract

Accurate diagnosis of infections caused by Herpes family viruses has become increasingly important in recent years. In part, this is because effective antiviral chemotherapy is now available for some herpes viruses, but equally important is the impact accurate diagnosis has on reducing dosages of immunosuppressive drugs and on implementing appropriate infection control procedures to prevent nosocomial spread of viral diseases.
