Abstract
In mammals oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid are steps in purine catabolism prior to excretion, uric acid being the end product in primates. These steps are catalyzed by xanthine dehydrogenase (oxidase), a complex molybdoflavoprotein.
