Insect Infestations of Domestic Animals

Insects that attack animals may do so quite temporarily (biting flies and most fleas); they may attack or invade for weeks or even months (cattle grubs and sticktight fleas), or they may be fully dependent on the host (lice). The parasitic stage that invades the host is always the larva (screwworms, fleeceworms, cattle grubs, bots) or adult (fleas, lice). Feeding patterns vary considerably, and as extreme examples some larval fleas feed on the hemorrhagic droppings of their blood-sucking parents, while certain adult flies are unable to feed at all, relying for their activity on the energy stored away in the juvenile stages, as in the cattle grub.
