Abstract

Patients with epilepsy commonly suffer changes in mental functions. This can be caused by the seizure process itself, either focal or generalized, or related to the postictal state. Recurrent seizures, or status epilepticus, cause a profound change in mental function that often lasts several days following cessation of the motor convulsions. Side effects of anticonvulsant medicines and drug toxicity must also be considered in a differential diagnosis of encephalopathy in patients with epilepsy. Finally, a physician must often rule out other causes of mental change that are either a consequence of a seizure, such as head trauma, or are present as part of a pathophysiological disease process that includes seizures, such as the other causes of metabolic encephalopathy discussed in this book. These issues are summarized in Table I.
