Abstract
Many scientists recognize that the pattern of human physical growth and development constitutes a sensitive response to environmental conditions (Colucci et al., 1973; Johnston and Schell, 1979; Tanner, 1978). Humanists may approach the phenomena of growth and development differently, emphasizing how widespread among the world’s societies and cultures is the high value placed on the health of children. The scientific and humanistic approaches may be unified when physical growth and development is taken as a primary measure of community health and of the quality of the environment for human habitation. This use of auxological data and research may be called a type of auxological epidemiology.
