Proliferation and Maturation of Neuronal Cells from the Central Nervous System in Culture

  • Chapter
Neurotransmitter Interaction and Compartmentation

Abstract

During embryogenesis the behaviour and the development of nerve cells in its successive steps of neuronal and glial evolution are influenced by the surrounding environment, cell contacts as well as trophic factors (Sherbet and Lakshmi, 1974; Le Douarin et al., 1975; England and Cowper, 1976; Toivonen et al., 1976; Noden, 1978; Cochard et al., 1979). The use of dissociated nerve cells in culture has facilitated investigations of the influence of growth factors on the development of these cells (Varon et al., 1973; De Vellis et al., 1977; Greene, 1977a, 1977b; Lim et al., 1977; Sensenbrenner, 1977; Hanson and Partlow, 1978; Patterson, 1978; Prochiantz et al., 1979; Sensenbrenner et al., 1980a; Thoenen and Barde, 1980).
