Abstract
Two main problems will be discussed: the first one is concerned with the mechanisms involved in the reciprocal regulation of the two nigrostriatal dopaminergic (DA) pathways. I will describe and summarize experiments which reveal the role of DA released from dendrites in this phenomenon. The second problem is related to some specific properties of the mesocortico-prefrontal DA neurons. Particularly, I intend to show that these neurons are distinct from those of the mesolimbic DA system which innervate subcortical structures and also originate from the ventro-tegmental area (VTA). The role of the mesocortico-prefrontal DA neurons in the regulation of DA transmission in subcortical structures through cortical efferent pathways will also be briefly discussed.
