Abstract

Both in quality and in quantity, textual technology is advancing rapidly. Electronic displays (soft copy) that generate light are called active displays, a familiar one being the cathode ray tube (CRT) display, which is an offspring of commercial television tubes and professional oscilloscopes. Passive displays, such as liquid crystal displays (LCD) change only their reflecting properties; they require outside illumination and have recently increased in text capacity. Printed sheets (hard copies) are reproduced by techniques which are already approaching large-scale magazine printing machines. Myers’ tutorial paper provides a comprehensive account of present-day devices for producing soft and hard copies and is a tribute to the technical creativity directed at rapid, flexible, high-quality, low-cost displays.
