Abstract
Gas discharged into a three-dimensional fluidized bed from a multiple-orifice gas distributor has been observed visually using a newly developed optical-fiber array probe. The rapid motion of particles near the grid region has been investigated with the improved version of the fiber optic probe developed previously in conjunction with a real-time correlator. The effects of distributor orifice configurations as well as orifice gas flow velocities on the behaviour of the gas issuing from an orifice are described in this paper. From the experimental results, the mode of gas discharge is found to be strongly affected by the surrounding particle phase.
