Abstract

The discovery that eukaryotic mRNAs were capped at the 5′ end (for a review, see ref.l) prompted us and others to examine the 5′ end of poliovirus mRNA. It had been shown before that virion RNA does not contain any nucleoside triphosphates (2). Consequently, virion RNA cannot be capped with m7G(5′)ppp(5′)Np.
