Abstract

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is a relatively new type of electron spectroscopy involving ejection of electrons from the core levels of atoms in materials by X-rays and measurement of their energy. Structural as well as analytical information may be obtained using this technique and in a short time XPS has found wide application in chemistry (Siegbahn et al., 1967). The purpose of this article is to review the limited number of applications that exist in the area of biochemistry and hopefully to stimulate further interest in this area. Commercial instruments have become available in the last few years and the capability of instrumentation is rapidly advancing. Initial experiments on instruments of early design indicate that unique structural and analytical information can be obtained and the quality of this information should be greatly improved using newer instruments.
