Structure and Thermodynamic Properties of Microclusters

  • Chapter
Book cover Sintering and Catalysis

Part of the book series: Materials Science Research ((MSR,volume 10))

Abstract

Extensive experimental and theoretical evidence suggest that the packing of atoms in microclusters does not correspond to any lattice structure. Rather the atoms are arranged in an icosahedral packing. The evidence for this packing and the reasons for its occurance are reviewed. In addition, some unexpected properties of microclusters are discussed.
