Abstract

Gonorrhoea is an inflammatory disease of the mucous membranes, glands and sinuses of the genital organs caused by N. gonorrhoeae and transmitted mainly sexually [43]. It may be localized in the rectum and very occasionally in the pharynx. Non-sexual transmission may result in ophthalmia neonatorum, conjunctivitis or, in young girls, vulvovaginitis. Septic complications affecting skin, joints and other internal organs are infrequent.
