Abstract
The burrow-dwelling, semiterrestrial crabs of the family Ocypodidae have radiated to occupy many different types of habitats from the tropics to the temperate regions. In some species, individuals may be relatively isolated from one another, while other species live in dense colonies with adjacent burrows separated by a few inches. The group displays a wide spectrum of difference in behavioral organization and complexity. Only one genus in the family, the fiddler crabs (Uca), has received broad study. A summary of current advances knowledge of the behavior, ecology, and physiology of these and other semiterrestrial crustaceans has recently been published in the American Zoologist (Barnwell, 1968; Bliss, 1968; Miller and Vernberg, 1968; Salmon and Atsaides, 1968; Schöne, 1968).
