Abstract

Poly(chloroprene-g-isobutylene) was synthesized by cationic grafting of isobutylene from polychloroprene, using diethylaluminum chloride as coinitiator. Pure graft copolymers were isolated by selective solvent extraction. Effects of reaction conditions on grafting efficiency were investigated. Determination of branch molecular weight was carried out by oxidation degradation of graft copolymer backbones, followed by isolation and characterization of residual polyisobutylene. Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of grafted polyisobutylene were indistinguishable from corresponding values for ungrafted homopolyisobutylene formed in the same polymerization.
