Abstract
Longidorus africanus, L. brevicaudatus and L. laevicapitatus were found around the roots of various field crops throughout the Sudan, in soils ranging from light sandy to heavy clay (up to 55% clay content). The most important is L. africanus which causes stubby and swollen roots of cotton plants when tested in the glasshouse; there was a direct correlation between the degree of severity of symptoms and the number of nematodes per test. The life cycle of L. africanus is 6–8 months at 30°–35°C.
