Population Differences in Growth: Environmental and Genetic Factors

  • Chapter
Human Growth

Abstract

There are differences among populations in body size and shape, and in rate of growth in children. These differences give rise to the population differences seen in adults. Even the casual observer will note that Japanese or Indian or Filipino children are smaller than their age peers in Europe or the United States. The more astute observer also perceives that the body shape of Japanese or Burmese children, for example, is different from the shape of West African or European children. School teachers and clinic workers may remark that American black adolescents seem to mature faster than their white peers.
