Abstract
Sea water is generally looked upon as a growth medium of constant chemical composition. The environmental conditions in the sea are also believed to be conservative, contrary to those of terrestrial environments. This is quite correct for many of the major parameters. The chemical composition of sea water is quite constant. Water is always available. The temperature ranges are rather narrow, ∼5°C ± 10°C, and, some few meters below the surface, currents and wave action are not very strong.
