Developmental Issues and Prognosis

  • Chapter
Autism

Abstract

In science the best test of the validity of any research finding is not whether the results reach statistical significance but rather whether they can be replicated by independent investigators using similar methods with comparable new populations of subjects. On this criterion our knowledge on the prognosis of autism rests on firm foundations. The results of prospective and follow-up studies of well-diagnosed groups of autistic children are highly consistent. Lotter (Chapter 32) has admirably summarized the key findings and outlined many of the outstanding issues.
