Abstract
An enormous amount of research work in the field of biological transport has been devoted to the study of the specialized excretory organ, the kidney. According to Morel (1967) this investigation may be divided into roughly four classes: (1) biophysics of the epithelial cells; (2) physiology of the nephron; (3) function of the kidney as a whole; (4) homeostasis of the body. Only the first group belongs properly to the subject matter of this book but it appears that due to the great morphological and functional complexity of the kidney this kind of information is, in fact, derived mostly from studies belonging to the other groups. Only a short survey of some aspects of kidney function will be attempted here; for a more complete information, specialized literature should be consulted.
