Abstract
THE POPULATION TRENDS most discussed nowadays are trends in the rate of population increase. This discussion is no exception. Banal as the subject may be, I am going to talk about trends in mortality and fertility, and in the rate of population increase. I shall begin with the trends in the industrialized areas of the world, and then turn to the underdeveloped countries. A separate description is warranted by the difference in the trends themselves and by the different implications of population trends in rich and poor countries.
