Abstract
The mechanism by which acute compression affects the function of peripheral nerve is not completely understood. The pathophysiology of nerve compression syndromes is related to both the magnitude and the duration of pressure. However, other factors such as nerve anatomy, systemic blood pressure and cardiovascular disease may modify the pressure-duration thresholds for nerve dysfunction. Recognition of these factors will have important implications for treatment of nerve compression lesions.
