Abstract
It has already been mentioned that E. coli—when growing aerobically on glucose—oxidizes about 50% of the glucose to CO2 for the production of ATP. The remaining 50% is converted into cellular material. It is this conversion that consumes most of the ATP formed in oxidation. In this Chapter the principal biosynthetic reactions involved in synthesis of cellular material and the main sites of ATP consumption will be outlined.
